16 brilliant films and TV shows you can watch on your UPC right now
UPC RECENTLY LAUNCHED My UPC Prime, an on-demand service available to UPC customers.
The service works like Netflix and presently boasts a few dozen films and TV box sets available to stream on-demand for no extra cost.
So, how does it compare to Netflix? Well, the offering is more limited for now, but there are still a number of terrific films available to watch when there’s nothing on the box, including a healthy selection of Irish films.
Here’s the best of the bunch.
1. Winter’s Bone
Roadside Flix / YouTube Roadside Flix / YouTube / YouTube
AKA the film that propelled Jennifer Lawrence to stardom.
In the film, J-Law plays a teenaged girl who must locate her missing father and protect her family against eviction. Gritty as hell, but well worth a gander.
2. Swingers
LionsgateVOD / YouTube LionsgateVOD / YouTube / YouTube
Contrary to what the title might suggest, this isn’t a raunchy film about swingers. Starring Jon Favreau as an unemployed actor nursing some serious break-up angst, it’s a sweet and funny bromantic comedy.
Perfect if you’re looking for something that isn’t too taxing.
3. Pilgrim Hill
Pilgrim Hill / Facebook Pilgrim Hill / Facebook / Facebook
Before Glassland, Gerard Barrett made Pilgrim Hill, a quiet rural drama set in Co. Kerry. Widely regarded as one of the best Irish films of recent years, you won’t regret watching this one.
4. McCullin
Vimeo Vimeo
Powerful documentary about renowned war photographer Don McCullin. McCullin is responsible for some of the most iconic war imagery of the twentieth century and here recounts his experiences working in the thick of it.
Fascinating.
5. Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God
tiff / YouTube tiff / YouTube / YouTube
Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God is one of the most extensive examinations of the sexual abuse scandals that have rocked the Catholic Church. Filmmaker Alex Gibney offers an unflinching look at how the scandals have affected the United States, Ireland and more.
Powerful, essential viewing.
6. Kisses
Studio Canal UK / YouTube Studio Canal UK / YouTube / YouTube
Gorgeous coming-of-age drama about two young teenagers who run away from home and spend a night in Dublin together. It’s a little bit magical.
7. Garage
unsungcinema / YouTube unsungcinema / YouTube / YouTube
Perhaps not one to watch if you’re in a fragile state of mind, Garage is one of the most respected Irish films of recent years. You’ll be awestruck by Pat Shortt’s performance alone.
8. Archipelago
Curzon Cinemas Curzon Cinemas
Starring a pre-Avengers Tom Hiddleston, Archipelago is the story of a family holiday gone awry. Expect tension, resentment, bitterness and awkwardness in abundance.
9. Doubt
Doubt / Facebook Doubt / Facebook / Facebook
Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Viola Davis and the late Philip Seymour Hoffman star in this drama about a nun who raises suspicions about a Catholic priest and his relationship with a student.

11. My Summer of Love
Fantasmagorie Fantasmagorie
Featuring Emily Blunt when she was a young ‘un, this acclaimed British film follows two girls as they go from friends to more-than-friends over the course of a summer. A little gem.
12. Sensation

Before he was gallivanting around in Star Wars, Domhnall Gleeson was busy playing socially awkward farmers and the like. In Sensation, Gleeson plays a farmer who teams up with a New Zealand call girl to open a brothel.
As quirky/dark as it sounds.
